Warm temperatures and construction go hand in hand, but I believe that winter is the ideal time to start thinking about and planning the process of building your home.
Instead of sitting back and twiddling your thumbs during the colder months, use this downtime to take the first steps toward constructing your dream home. In this article, I’ll share some reasons why starting your project in the winter is a good idea, along with some ideas to help you get the job done.
Planning is king
As with everything, preparation is the most important step in any project. A solid foundation is just as essential for planning as it is (literally) for your house. That’s why I strongly suggest that you take this step during winter.
Normally, people rush through the planning stage and jump on it as soon as spring hits. But instead, why not get a head start well in advance? I believe it’s never too early to start planning—consider doing it even a year ahead of schedule to ensure you’re as prepared as possible.
It all starts with an idea
First up on the agenda: Find your inspiration and determine your desired items. Winter’s a great time to get inspired because showrooms are all set up for browsing. Visit furniture retailers and hardware stores, and plan your to-do list. See if there are any new and exciting materials. What about all the latest interior trends? Use this time to gather information and ideas. You’ll be glad you did.
Some winter construction concerns
If you have the option, wait before breaking ground during the winter. Cold weather can slow you down, possibly costing you more in the long run. If there’s no getting around it, make sure your contractor takes the time to plow and de-ice surfaces, build and heat temporary structures, and ensure the ground and water don't freeze throughout the job.
Keep your wallet happy
Extra costs caused by cold weather are no laughing matter. For example, when I was building my house, the stonemason had to build a temporary shelter and heat it while laying his stone. This added to the overall bill.
A major advantage of planning during the cold season is the cost savings. Take the time to get numerous quotes from different contractors to ensure you get the best deal. If you rush the process, you’ll be more likely to make impulsive decisions that may cost you in the long run.
I advise opting for a game plan that lasts many months and starts in winter—this is how to save time and money and minimize your stress levels
