Designing and landscaping your backyard is a big project. Not only is it time-consuming, but you also have to meticulously consider all the small details that, in the end, make a big difference. It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been three years since we took on this monumental task, and what really helped was dividing the project into several steps.
1- Determine the desired living spaces according to your needs and establish a plan
My first piece of advice is to start by establishing the desired spaces according to your needs and lifestyle, while keeping in mind your initial budget. My advice is: if your backyard already has a decent layout and you don't dislike it, then use it as a starting point. Sometimes it's a matter of using your imagination to create a space to your liking while maintaining the existing layout (if everything is still in good condition).
For example, we had a large square patio, dark red in colour, with black aluminum railings. We opened up the space by removing the railings, modified the patio by installing large stairs, put up a new wooden fence, and repainted the patio. The patio got a major revamp and, without necessarily enlarging the space, we managed to create an effect of grandeur.
2- Learn about your municipality's bylaws
Secondly, it’s vital that you inform yourself about your municipality's by-laws when it comes to larger projects, whether it’s for a patio, a fence, or the installation of a swimming pool in particular. For example, if you’re planning on installing an in-ground pool, there are certain rules to follow, some of which are more obvious than others. The size of a pool can also play a big role in the layout of your yard since it takes up space and requires more work. We have a 12x24 pool and I genuinely love the size—it's not too big, not too small. If you have a smaller yard and still want an in-ground pool, I personally find that small pools are becoming more and more trendy, and it’s possible to create a beautiful layout as well by adding plants and flowers around it. It gives a warmer and more intimate look.
3- Evaluate what you can do yourself in order to save costs
My third piece of advice before kicking off your project is to evaluate what tasks you can handle yourself in order to save costs. If you have landscaping knowledge or are crafty, great! Depending on the type of layout you want to create, there are several alternatives to help minimize costs. It might take a little longer and you might have to divide your project into several steps spread over 2 or 3 summers, but cost-wise, it’ll be worth it. I think it's better to take your time thinking about the spaces you want instead of trying to get it all done as quickly as possible. Remember that this is probably the place where you’ll end up spending the most time during the summer.
4- Incorporate shaded areas and define which spaces could benefit from lights for evenings spent outside
The fourth thing that in my opinion is important to consider is shaded areas. Depending on your layout, the positioning of the sun during the day, and the number of trees, you’ll want to make sure you have a few shaded spaces in your backyard. For example, if you plan on frequently dining outdoors, you might want to consider installing a shelter that keeps you comfortable and dry no matter the weather.
5- Choose materials, plants, and furniture to ensure a beautiful synergy
And finally, the last step involves choosing your materials, plants, and furniture. The part I like most about designing a backyard is finding inspiration to dress the space up: dining table, fireplace area, deck chairs, etc. There are several platforms or applications that allow you to view all of your inspirations and test out your layout. Yes, this step can get costly, but you can save significant sums by shopping end-of-season sales or by browsing second-hand furniture sites. And sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning or sanding and staining to breathe new life into an old piece.
And there you have it—my top tips for designing your backyard and making the most out of the time spent with family and friends.
