Behind closed doors, storage tips!

Ah, how to stay organized . . .

We all have cluttered drawers, junk bowls, “I’ll-deal-with-it-later” table corners . . . and I’m definitely no exception! In fact, I have to admit that I’m rather disorganized. However, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks over the years that have really helped me in my everyday life. And as a mother of a young child, I always try to organize our space in such a way as to allow both of us to quickly and easily find whatever it is we’re looking for. So, whether you’ve recently moved or just haven’t had time to organize your home lately (which is completely normal given the current situation), here are my top tips for getting back-to-school organized and ready!

Your kitchen

The kitchen is the room where we spend the most time, so having a well-organized pantry is essential. When everything is properly identified and organized, it’s easier to see your inventory and know what items you’re running low on. In turn, this means less waste and more efficient meal prep!

I try to eliminate all packaging by using glass jars and containers that I arrange in an orderly fashion. Not only are glass jars aesthetically pleasing, but they also help preserve food longer and make it easier to see what’s what at a glance. Try arranging your pantry by category (example: group all your grains together, set aside a corner just for snacks, etc.) and size. And remember: buying in bulk is quicker and more eco-friendly!

Your closets

Like author and decluttering guru Marie Kondo likes to say: Make sure everything has its own designated place (such as a room, furniture, basket, or cabinet), and try to group similar items together. Take advantage of the occasion to sort through your closets and eliminate anything you haven’t used in a long time or that you’ve forgotten even existed. Maximize your space by adding shelves and storage boxes. IKEA offers a wide variety of modular systems that can be adjusted according to your space and needs.

Storage in Your children’s play area

As parents, we try to encourage our kids to be independent, and part of that is teaching them to pick up after themselves! I recommend organizing their play area and storage space around them, making sure everything is accessible and easy for them to reach. Personally, I love using toy baskets. I leave a footstool in my daughter’s bedroom, which she can easily move around to help her reach toys that are higher up.

Ultimately, the goal is to organize your home in such a way as to find things easily, maximize your time, and not feel overwhelmed every time you open your cabinets. I hope these tips will help you start the back-to-school season on the right foot. :) I’ll leave you with some of my favourite stores, and of course, don’t hesitate to follow me on Pinterest for more inspiration :)
