Ways to reduce bathroom renovation costs

Hard to believe that it’s been a year since redoing my bathroom on a shoestring budget, but here we are! Looking back, I learned a lot from my mistakes, so in this article, I’ll share some advice that will spare you from unnecessary headaches if you’re planning a bathroom renovation of your own.

Seek out the pros

If you’re planning a larger renovation, it's always best to hire a competent contractor—your first step in reducing stress, speeding up the work, and ensuring you stay on budget. While contractors won’t be able to offer you a fixed price, they can provide you with cost estimates, so you can plan ahead. Try to prepare a harmonious job site where the various trades work together in harmony, rather than the less-than-ideal scenario that can drive up the cost of your renovation. Remember, you can save on the bill by tackling the finishing touches yourself.

If you decide to have your tiles installed professionally, keep in mind that many companies charge by square footage, with additional fees, if the design or tile shape is unconventional. My lack of experience came through in this part of the process! Considering my lack of experience, I neglected this and wound up paying the price. These are factors you must consider, especially if you’re tiling a large surface area.

Where to cut back and where to spend more

The golden rule: Save money wherever possible. For starters, paint is always going to be the most cost-effective solution. All you need is a coat of paint to completely transform door handles, cabinets, and even floors. What’s more, this is a great way to warm up the space and avoid a sterile, cold renovation. When it comes to your walls, I highly recommend using high-quality bathroom and spa paint that will last over time and prevent mildew from setting in. It’s more expensive upfront but will save you in the long run.

I’d also never compromise on the cost of a faucet. Investing in high-quality hardware will save you tons of trouble down the line. It also offers you a more luxurious finish, especially if you’ve cut back on other costs. A friendly word of advice: Be sure to double-check that your faucet and sink are compatible—I know someone who overlooked that detail, and it’s a predicament I’m sure you’ll want to avoid.

Whenever possible, keep plumbing and electrical fixtures in the same spot to avoid adding to the cost of labor. Just a touch of creativity is all it takes to transform a room without extensive renovations.

Flexibility is key

If you plan to use a wooden countertop, don't do as I did: make sure to use the appropriate sealer, especially if you have kids. It's impossible to guarantee that there won't be any puddles or spills—always expect the unexpected when renovating.

By following these tips, you'll be able to renovate your bathroom on a tight budget while keeping costs to a minimum. Remember to plan carefully, research materials, and remember that quality is an important consideration for many elements. Happy renovating!
