Drinking my morning cup of coffee is probably my favourite part of starting a new day.
That’s why I created a space in my home dedicated entirely to this morning ritual. It just so happens that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Follow these tips to create a coffee nook of your very own at home.
Inspiration
The foundation of any decorating project
As with any new project, before I do anything I start the process by sifting through various print and visual media to find inspiration. For this project, I was influenced by the various cafés I've visited in places I love, like Paris or Montreal. I wanted to recreate my favourite aspects of each right here at home, so I studied how each cafe used colour, materials, and even observed how they chose to display their products.
Choosing the materials we used
AKA, the fun part
Choosing materials is probably my favourite part of any renovation. This time around, I fell in love with a tile that has a terrazzo-like effect from a company called Centura—it's the base to our coffee corner. Next, we chose the paint colour for the cabinet, Adobe Rose from Sico and cherrywood for the shelf to complement the terrazzo tiles.
For the tile application, which we used to create a countertop and backsplash, we wanted to be reminded of one of my favourite Parisian cafés. Here’s a pro tip: Choosing your paint colours should be the very last step, because there's such an endless number of choices. It's easier to match up a colour with your other materials rather than trying to do the opposite.
Diving up the space
Where function and style meet
For our coffee corner, we needed storage to stash our extra beans, coffee cups, and kitchen items. This is why we chose kitchen cabinets, which allowed us to come up with the very best configuration. Then, to fulfill our decorative desires, we chose to install a shelf above the cabinet so that we could keep personal items on full display. This also helped us create a boutique-café type of vibe.
The finishing touches
Bringing your vision comes to life
It's always such a pleasure to see your hard work paying off. You wind up with a like-new interior, that you’ll inevitably catch yourself admiring several times a day. For a finishing touch to the coffee nook, we picked out items to complement the look we wanted. On our wooden shelf, we placed both practical items (cups, stirring spoons, crate with coffee capsules) and decorative items (frame, candles, vases and various accessories) to create the perfect finishing touch. I love arranging items in a tone-on-tone colour palette to ensure it looks visually appealing without ever looking over done.
It's so easy and fun to create your own coffee corner at home. It makes working remotely all the more enjoyable, too! Sometimes, when I’m feeling like recreating the coffee shop feel, I prep my coffee in a reusable to-go mug. All that’s left to do now is improve my latté art skills.
