Welcome Spring with Flair
Spring is just around the corner! With the warmer weather upon us, are you feeling the need to brighten and update your décor? Here are some tips on how to add colour to your décor this spring without changing everything . . . and respecting your style and budget. You'll see that it's even possible to spruce up a black-and-white room simply by choosing the right accessories.
Colour Psychology: Influence on the Mood
This spring, elevate your décor with a splash of colour and see how it can affect your overall mood. Colour psychology studies the impact colours can have on our emotions and behaviours. Although colours can be perceived differently from one individual to another, the main principles are very real and applied in several spheres of our lives, such as home decoration.
This spring, natural colours, such as green and blue, are the stars of the show. Earthy tones, ranging all the way to shades of pink, are also trending.
BLUE
Whether pastel or deep, blue evokes feelings of serenity. This colour is often associated with cleanliness, stability, and confidence. This is one of the reasons it’s widely used in public places.
GREEN
Green is a versatile colour that comes in several hues. Green reminds us of nature and conjures a sense of calm, especially when it features blue undertones. It’s also a colour that harmonizes well with natural textures such as various types of wood.
ORANGE
In this palette, all earthy shades such as terracotta, burgundy, and brown carve out a place for themselves when it comes to creating energizing and stimulating décors. A wide range of colours to choose from to boost creativity. Due to its vibrant and saturated nature, this palette is ideal in an office or workshop.
PINK
Pink is becoming increasingly popular in homes. Dusty pink is also omnipresent in today’s trendiest décor styles. Pink hues inspire benevolence, comfort, and positivity. A splash of pink in the bathroom is a great way to start the day.
Painting: A Simple Transformation
This spring, you don't need to repaint your rooms from top to bottom to update them. A single colourful section can change everything! Choose a colour you like and a piece of furniture or part of your room that you want to highlight by framing it with a colourful geometric shape. A little pop of colour will make all the difference and give a more finished look to your room. Plus, it's a nice way to subtly brighten up a space.
In this before/after, I decided to dress up a storage corner with an eye-catching colour. The owner of the place confided in me that she wanted to visually conceal the door on the right, which she rarely uses. By creating this coloured area, the piece of furniture suddenly has a clearer purpose and attention is diverted when entering the room through the other door.
Accessories for effortless renewal
The change of seasons always brings about a desire for renewal. Instead of running to the store, have fun moving your accessories from one room to another. Shopping in your own home will allow you to form new accessory arrangements and help your creativity flourish. You could distribute your cushions differently between the bedroom and the living room to create a new, more spring-inspired look. You can also change your coffee table books and even go so far as to swap a compatible window treatment between two rooms.
Before buying new items, visit flea markets and thrift stores, where you’re bound to make beautiful, more personalized finds. For example, you could come across a beautiful lampshade that will breathe new life into your favourite lamp without having to change its structure. Think about rearranging the items on your shelves and reorganizing your exposed tableware to add a pop of colour to your space. Shopping second-hand is also a great way to find unique items in colours you’ve never tried before, all without breaking the bank.
Artwork as an inspiring starting point
Find a piece of art to create your new décor. Whether it's an original piece, a print, a second-hand object, or your creation, any artwork can serve as an inspiring starting point. Use the colour or shape of the piece to direct your new décor. Without necessarily turning to floral graphics reminiscent of spring, opt for more pastel or saturated colours that will infuse a breath of fresh air into your home.
In this room, I slightly transformed the atmosphere using cushions and throws that were previously being used in the living room. Inspired by the watercolours by artist Lysa Jordan (above the bed), I opted for blue, which brings a lot of light to this new atmosphere.
Plants for a Hint of Life
Nothing says spring like plants and flowers. Don't hesitate to add greenery to your décor. Choose a few versatile plants that you can transfer outside this summer and slowly get ready for the colourful season.
Find new planters or paint the ones you already have to give them a new look. Here's a simple idea for transforming a vase you already have at home. You'll need a paint of your choice and baking soda, which you'll mix with the paint until the desired consistency is obtained. The thicker the mixture, the more you’ll achieve the antique pottery effect.
For those who don't have a green thumb, add a few bouquets of dried or fresh-cut flowers to your home—they’ll instantly brighten up any room.
