The arrival of summer brings with it the desire to spend more time outdoors and liven up our terraces, whether sprawling or small. Whether you have a small balcony or a large terrace, this outdoor place is an extension of your living space for the months to come! How do you transform this space into an inviting and warm oasis? Here are some decorating essentials that will make all the difference in your design, including accessories, lighting, and plants.

What accessories should you choose for a comfy-cozy terrace? Start by defining the style that inspires you—who knows, you might already own a few pieces you can recycle. Don't hesitate to shop in your own home; moving your decoration around with the seasons can help you revamp your home without busting the bank!

To inspire comfort on your terrace, opt for generous and luxurious textiles, add a blanket for cool evenings, a rug that delimits the space, and furniture varied in textures. Textures make a space inviting, so don’t hesitate to combine wood, concrete, and coloured metals!

Have fun creating an inspiration board for your project: gather the objects you love on one page and add elements to make more informed choices. For example, if you're hesitating between a few different colours, it’ll be easier to make a decision once you see all the elements together. In addition, if you’re more of an online shopper, this will help you visualize how well certain colours and elements fit together. Here are three mood boards that might help you figure out what terrace style is the one for you!

How to create an inviting atmosphere? Although the choice of decorative accessories is crucial when creating an inviting atmosphere, lighting is probably the most neglected aspect, and it’s one that requires little effort for maximum effect! Proper lighting on a terrace helps create an ambience, highlight different areas, extend the evenings, and make the space safe. Here are 5 ways to create a cozy atmosphere on your deck by choosing the right light sources for your project.

1. Install string lights

String lights are a great way to create a cozy atmosphere. They can be hung along walls, above the deck, or wrapped around poles and trees. Choose bulbs that give off a warm light, for more privacy and comfort.

2. Add standalone lighting (no electricity needed)

If you don't have electricity nearby, choose standalone battery-powered or solar lights. There are many trendy models on the market with different styles that can match any décor. Recently, I found some beautiful battery-powered hanging lights, perfect for enhancing any outdoor dining room. The result is practical and elegant . . . and it looks just like an actual ceiling fixture! If you choose battery-powered lights, opt for rechargeable batteries, which are much more economical and durable.

3. Turn up the flame (warm and romantic atmosphere guaranteed)

Candlelit lanterns and holders are sure to create a warm atmosphere every time! If your space doesn't allow you to safely light a flame, opt for LED candles—they look just as good. There are beautiful ethanol tabletop fireplaces that fit easily into small spaces, and whose flame really has a mesmerizing effect!

4. Add functional lighting

Functional lighting can make your space feel warmer and more inviting. Lights along the stairs, LED strips placed under furniture, garden lights that trace a path along the ground . . . the trick is to choose warm lighting that will set the tone.

5. Opt for dimmable lights

Dimmers allow you to control the intensity of the lighting. With this feature, you can create a personalized atmosphere at any time of the day! Have a few dimmable light sources in your space—above, behind, and in front of you for maximum adjustable ambience.

How to choose plants that best suit your lifestyle? Plants are a must-have in outdoor landscaping, the bright green leaves instantly brighten up your backyard, making your space look beautiful no matter the weather. Whether you have a green thumb or not, there are different natural or synthetic options to give your terrace a tropical vibe!

Using plants to create a bit of privacy is a great way to incorporate some greenery into your décor and combine esthetics with functionality. If your terrace is small, opt for multifunctional elements. For example, you could arrange climbing plants along your railing or on trellises, or add potted grass to your space, which will continue to grow and offer privacy throughout the season. For more privacy without the maintenance, opt for adjustable trellises that already include synthetic foliage, available in most hardware stores.

Nothing adds a splash of colour like flowers: choose plants that are adapted to your location and the position of your terrace in relation to the sun. Design your layout according to the time you want to devote to gardening. You can even include edible flowers in your pots to multiply the possibilities and optimize your space. If you really don't feel like gardening, opt for nature-inspired decorative items, such as a blanket or cushions with floral and leaf patterns that are reminiscent of plants.

Vary your selection of plants to diversify your décor: for example, you could have some fresh herbs and decorative pots for flowers. Varying the heights and textures will bring a lot of warmth to your décor! If you want a little change, paint your metal or ceramic pots to give them a facelift. Here’s one of my top tips: add a little baking soda to your paint for a clay-like effect—the texture will also help camouflage any patterns that no longer jive with your decorating style. Don't hesitate to combine real plants with fake ones for less maintenance and a very interesting visual. Be original!

Finally, don't forget to have fun while designing your comfy and inviting terrace. A harmonious combination of your favourite decorative items, light sources, and colourful plants will give style and personality to your terrace this year. Whether your terrace is big or small, the goal remains the same: to create a unifying space where you can take full advantage of the beautiful summer days.
