Do you have a swimming pool or are you thinking about installing one? Do you know how much it costs to maintain it? Are you wondering how to make your pool more ecofriendly? So many questions, and we’ve got the answers!

Launched in 2013, Hydro-Québec’s Efficient Pools Program recommends energy-efficient products to help reduce electricity costs. With the right habits at the right time, you’ll save all season long. Use the pool consumption calculator to learn how much electricity your pool or spa uses.

Use less energy and lower your electricity bill

When it comes to pool care, current and future owners should adopt environmentally responsible habits. Discover the benefits of using electricity wisely without compromising water quality thanks to a few energy-efficient products.

Here are four tips to adopt this summer for more ecofriendly dips:

Solar pool cover

Did you know that a solar pool cover is an excellent way to save? Using the cover when no one’s in the water reduces evaporation and helps maintain the water temperature during the night.

It’s a simple tip that’ll really pay off, since it can help you save up to 45% on your pool heating costs every season.

Two-speed or variable-speed pump

Two speeds are better than one, especially when it comes to pool pumps! If you’re installing a new pool or your current pump is on its last legs, consider purchasing a two-speed or variable-speed model. It’ll optimize water filtration, reduce your costs and give you peace of mind so your summer can go swimmingly.

Save up to 70% on your water filtration costs with a two-speed pump and up to 80% with a variable-speed model. The choice is up to you!

Heat pump

In a heat wave, we all want to cool off in the pool, but we don’t want the water to be too cold. Pretty paradoxical!

It’s easy to lower the temperature of your heat pump on hot days, but are you brave enough to go two degrees lower? It’s a small change that’ll help you save up to 25% on your water heating costs. Worth it, right?

Timer*

A timer is a great idea: it’s simple to program and will shut off your pool pump for a certain period of time, like overnight, without affecting water quality.

Program your timer when summer sets in and save up to 45% on water filtration costs all season long. You’ll have recouped the cost of the timer before the end of pool season.

*Please note: Timers are not appropriate for all types of pools. For more information, please visit Hydro-Québec's website.

Dive into the stats!

In Quebec, approximately 580,000 households have a pool, including 20,000 new homeowners every year. All told, water heaters, filters and pumps use a lot of energy and account for a good chunk of your electricity bill. So how can you be more ecofriendly and still have plenty of fun in the sun?

Here are a few more tips for in-ground and above-ground pools.

Have a great summer!
