Decorating for Halloween doesn’t have to mean letting your home become overrun with skeletons, orange garlands and plastic spiders. You can adapt each room’s decor to reflect this holiday’s special spirit, without compromising its style.
To this end, select items that blend in with the existing decor to avoid overwhelming the space. Furthermore, only use high-quality accessories (or, at the very least, that don’t look cheap) and stick to a complementary palette of muted colours. Finally, this is an excellent opportunity to add texture!
A Spectacular Kitchen
In the kitchen, focus on elements that whet the appetite instead of ruin it (slimy monsters and spiderwebs are perhaps not appropriate). For example, strings of glowing lights, even in an orange tone, will warm up the space. Additionally, fallen leaves, pumpkins and autumnal blooms make eye-catching accents.
A Thematic Display
You could likewise focus all your decorating efforts on one zone that won’t impact the rest of your overall decor, such as the corner of a particular room or along a wall. For example, stack a few bales of hay for an instant fall ambiance. Then complete the seasonal arrangement with lanterns, pumpkins, or Halloween-specific decorations.
Decorations That Bring a Smile to Your Face
Do you live in a condominium? Why not decorate your front door? Skip the ghosts and ghouls and try a lighthearted display with upside down witch’s legs. This is an easy DIY project. Simply stuff knee-length socks and stiletto boots with newspapers and conceal the bottom edge with pumpkins.
A Subtle Approach
You can also give the bedroom a Hall Hallow’s Eve atmosphere but stick to seasonal instead of spooky accents. Examples include wood logs, white-painted squashes, earth-toned vases filled with dried flowers and grasses. Go the extra mile and make the bed feel even cozier by swapping your regular comforter for a burnt orange one.
Black and White
Another way of achieving a Halloween-inspired atmosphere that will harmonize with your home’s existing decor is to stick to black and white accessories and decorations. This colour combination always looks chic! Plus, black is a traditional Halloween colour and will add drama to the space. Use this hue to create a tablescape, for example, with a black garland, bare branches adorned with bats, black-painted pumpkins, or even black glass wine bottles.
A Revamped Fireplace
If you have a fireplace, either wood burning or gas, you should know that thanks to its striking presence it is the perfect backdrop for seasonal decorating. There are many different ways of creating a spirited mantlescape: draping it with black spiderwebs (for a more refined look than the typical white), hanging a bat garland or adorning it with an assortment of jack-o-lanterns. Place a jute rug at the base of the fireplace to bring the whole display together.
As you can see, you don’t need to transform you home into a haunted house to get into the Halloween spirit!
