THE ORIGINS The municipality of Saint-François-du-Lac extends over an area of more than 63 square kilometers in the administrative region of Centre-du-Québec. It is part of the regional county municipality of Nicolet-Yamaska. Saint-François, located south of Lake Saint-Pierre, along the Saint-François River, now has more than 2,000 Franciloises and Francilois. The name of the municipality was chosen in honor of Saint François Xavier, Jesuit missionary, the Apostle of the Indies who lived in the 16th century and who evangelized in China, as well as in honor of François de Lauzon, son of Jean de Lauzon, whose seigneury was located on the banks of the Saint-François River. The du Lac part was added because of the proximity of Lac Saint-Pierre (source: 350e municipality website).
