Make playroom and encourage autonomy in toddlers

More and more, we’re hearing about the Montessori method, and how encouraging independent play in toddlers can be helpful in their development. Here are some tips for creating a playroom that encourages your children to play autonomously.

Play safely

For your peace of mind

Recently, I read that intervening early on with our toddlers can block their sense of discovery and confidence, instilling a fear in them that comes from their parents rather than self-taught. This often occurs because we're apprehensive about the area in which our children play. My solution is to create a safe space designed to let our littlest ones explore their surroundings freely.

A suitable place to play

The best way to allow toddlers to play safely (and give parents some precious peace of mind) is to provide them with a play surface that’s suited to their mobility. Foam mats for babies are a great idea—they absorb shock if your child falls, or makes a sudden, unexpected movement while creating a limited section and play surface for them. For toddlers with daredevil streaks, mats are perfect for your amateur stuntman's pirouettes.

Fun at your fingertips

The easiest way to encourage a child to play with toys is to leave them within reach. Personally, I make better use of objects that are in my field of vision and at my height—the same can be said for your little ones, too.

To achieve this, we rely on low and open storage: furniture made for children, open bookcases, baskets placed directly on the floor, and other such measures. By ensuring their books and toys are within reach, this empowers children to make the decisions to play with whatever they like without having to rely on you. As a bonus, this layout also teaches them to clean up after themselves.

A cozy corner

Much like adults, children sometimes need to take a moment to relax, refuel from an emotional day, and quietly read by themselves. Make their downtime a joyful experience by placing a few cushions on the floor, a play tent in the corner along with some other fun elements to create a quiet cocoon for them. For a little extra magic, encourage them to read by adding shelves or a book-filled basket on the floor. This is also a great way to teach your children about how to manage their emotions.

Creating a playroom for your toddlers can be a whole lot of fun. By including a proper play surface, low-to-the-ground storage and a cozy corner, you will help your little ones develop their independence while allowing them to have fun. All that's left is to choose the decor, the best part of all.
