passive solar positioning, post-beam construction, straw bale insulation.

At the top of a mountain in Morin Heights sits this comfortable two-story, eco-friendly and unique real straw bale house. Shaded by maple, birch and beech trees, 10.9 acres with trails great for snow-shoeing and observing wildlife. There is a spot in the woods overlooking a cliff with space for a picnic and fire. Home is positioned to take most advantage of the sun. Features a screened veranda and back deck, open-concert 1st floor, no basement, wood stove and mezzanine. 1 1/2 baths, 2 bedrooms + office space. Heated cement floors.

The house itself took 3 years to build. The construction uses trees from the property as posts, old recovered beams from a nearby barn to support the second floor and roof, actual straw bales in the walls covered with a mix of clay, sand and an outer shell of lime stucco. There are also a lot of details that give the house its charm, from the trees on the inside, one of which has a branch reaching up to touch the cathedral ceiling, to the face of the Roman God on the top of the east wall. Small alcoves are shaped into the clay walls on the interior and the clay is also rounded around all of the windows which are set deep in the walls.

The idea of using straw and clay instead of manufactured construction materials creates a more gentle footprint on the environment

Straw itself is a great insulator with an insulation value surpassing the conventional home (in 2008). The house stays cool in the summer and holds its heat for a long time in the winter once it is warm.
The materials lend themselves well to shaping and rounded edges - which give a lot of comfort and character to the living space.

The walls are thick, 14 inches of straw covered by another inch of clay on both sides makes for a 16-inch wall. This makes the house very quiet and creates interesting and deep window ledges. It also gives the feeling of being in a castle!

Being in the forest, the straw bale house is actually a good choice for fire resistance. The thick clay walls offer an excellent barrier to fires; taking about two hours for fire to penetrate. Even the straw bales themselves are very compact and therefore do not contain enough oxygen for combustion.
